Best food for men to improve age related health conditions.

Men don’t have to spend a whole lot of money on expensive supplements to improve general age related health conditions. Just go to any food store and you will find great tasting foods that will benefit your health.

Memory – Blueberries

Antioxidants are known to help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. Blueberries contain the compounds called anthocyanins and phenolics, that act as antioxidants.

The compound anthocyanin gives blueberries their color and is considered to be the key component of the blueberry’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It protects the brain’s memory cells, called neurons, from the negative effects of oxidation and inflammation. Blueberries test high in their ability to subdue free radicals. These free radicals can damage cell membranes and DNA through a process known as oxidative stress. They are also blamed for many of the dysfunctions and diseases associated with aging. Blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity. Research has shown that a serving of fresh blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables. (Link to research)

Heart Health – Salmon or Trout

Salmon and Trout are one of the best sources for heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. They are packed with proteins, and low in saturated fat. Fresh is the best, however they could get expensive. Look for discount or sale in your local food stores weekly flyers. There is always sale on fresh Salmon or Trout. Frozen can be purchased for a little less if you are on a budget. Avoid the canned versions as they have preservatives added. The best way to cook is either baking or grilling. Do not fry as it defeats the whole purpose of Heart healthy.

Energy – Lentils

Lentils are rich in fiber and protein, which are digested slowly. Lentils also provide good to excellent amounts of six important minerals, two B-vitamins (essential to energy production), and protein-all with virtually no fat. The calorie cost of all this nutrition? Just 230 calories for a whole cup of cooked lentils. They are a good source of iron, which helps red blood cells carry oxygen. Red meat is another source of iron, however lentils, unlike red meat, are not rich in fat and calories. Try lentil soup during lunch.

Sex Drive – Watermelon, Sesame Seeds

Watermelons are available abundantly during summer and are very inexpensive. They taste great and quench your thirst. They also contain a naturally occurring chemical called citrulline, which triggers production of Arginine in the body. Arginine is a compound that helps relax the body’s blood vessels. This is the same effect triggered by Viagra. The reaction is also beneficial to the circulatory system, the heart and the immune system. Eat watermelons daily and save a bunch while enjoying life naturally. (Link to research)

Sesame Seeds are very rich in the amino acid arginine, which is involved in synthesizing nitric oxide, a compound that enhances blood flow through the arteries. Toasted sesame seeds add a nice nutty taste to salads, cooked grains, or cereal. You also can enjoy them in hummus, which is made with ground chickpeas and tahini (sesame seed paste).

DASH Diet: A Diet for Peace of Mind

DASH Diet: A Diet for Peace of Mind

When I say the word “Diet”, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Probably some rock hard abs and slim figures with beautiful curves, right? But this diet is something very different from the normal ones and it is called a DASH diet. So what exactly is DASH diet?

The word DASH means Diet Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It is promoted by the National Institute of Health, which is a United States government organization. Now, it is self-explanatory that the DASH diet’s main priority is to control hypertension. A good mind leads to a good body. Currently, around 50 million people are affected by hypertension in the United States and approximately one billion worldwide.

The relationship between blood pressure and cardiovascular disease events remain consistent. Hence, there are greater chances of events like heart attack, heart failure, heart stroke, and other kidney diseases. Dieting and maintaining fitness may only boost our muscular strength, but it cannot lower the risk of such events. If a person is suffering from hypertension, his body will not react much to his fitness regime, so it is very important for us to take care of both muscular and intellectual organs.

One of the major features of the DASH diet is limiting intake of sodium, and consumption of nuts, wholegrains, fish, poultry, fruits and vegetables. DASH Diet also encourages lowering the consumption of red meats, sweets and sugar. DASH diet food is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, protein and fiber. The diet aims to reduce the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients, while simultaneously providing them with a daily caloric intake of 1699 to 3100 dietary calories. Since DASH diet features a high quotient of anti-oxidant rich foods, it can help to prevent chronic health problems like cancer, heart diseases and stroke.
